Optimism and Thanksgiving

One of the (many) things which motivates my animus towards much MSM reporting about our government, our military and our country generally is its profound pessimism. As the child of immigrants, who counts his blessings for having been born in the USA and no place else, I can say I feel extraordinarily fortunate. This is an amazing country - where people with no "birthright", no connections and no money, can enjoy great success and build a future for their families not available to so many elsewhere.

Thanksgiving is a uniquely American holiday which I think captures much of that sense of optimism. It is in some ways religious, yet non sectarian. Everyone who comes here and lives here can enjoy Thanksgiving -- and it isn't plagued with the commercialism of a Christmas holiday. Thanksgiving unites, brings families and the country together. I don't think any other nation shares this kind of event (though I may be corrected on this).

Reagan was right -- it is Morning in America.

Happy Thanksgiving...

Canada has its Thanksgiving on the second Monday in October (Columbus Day in the US).

You are so right. This is a fantastic country, but you wouldn't know it if you read most textbooks and watched most TV news. I can live almost anywhere but I choose to live here. God has already blessed America and this is a good time of year to focus on that.

It's not really surprising that in the film era of the anti-hero ("Jarhead" being the latest unsavory example), we've redefined patriotism to mean opposing the military actions of his government. There's no doubt that the MSM has a cynical slant, whether it's the President trying to open a locked door or an "x" across the Veep's face. Everybody laughs it up. Meanwhile Iran cobbles together its nuclear capabilities. We need a coalition of the adults, to quote Bull Moose.

My almost five Sweet Granddaughter asked me about Thanksgiving and at the same time said that was a time for a "Feast". I inquired and she said that was what the teacher at head start had told her.

I replied that yes it was a time for the family and friends and even schools to have a "feast" but did she know that there were other things that we could be thankful for on Thanksgiving?

She said..

I have thankfuls for having Mama, Bubba and you, Papa and lots of friends and my kiddy and lots of toys.

I told her that was a lot to be thankful for and as she grew up to be a "big girl" she would discover many other things to be thankful for.

I am thankful, so thankful for her. She brought this ol' man a new lease on life.

Abraham Lincoln, from his proclamation of a National Day of Thanksgiving,

"It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and voice by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union."
