More Muslim rage

Apparently one is not allowed to depict Mecca on a playing card.
Police fired tear gas at hundreds of rampaging demonstrators on Tuesday in the main city of the Indian portion of Kashmir, protesting the publication by an Indian magazine of the picture of Islam's holiest Shrine on a playing card.

I guess that means that it would be a bad idea to build a huge "Mecca" resort in Vegas. Too bad.

This has crossed from "bizarre" or even "stupid" into "assinine."

Flash from Pakistan: Hundreds killed in riots as offended Muslims take to the streets to burn and destroy the property of other Muslims after first Muslims realize that the second Muslims failed to properly protest the British film about the life of Muhammad, "The Message (1976)."

Said a rioter: "That film is an outrage. It is one of Anthony Quinn's worst works. Lawrence of Arabia was much better. I'm all for artistic creativity, but death to all who dare to depict Islam! And death to Anthony Quinn!"

Said Alec Baldwin, who was coincidentally in Pakistan at the time, released a brief statement: "These insane and angry crowds marauding the streets of Pakistan's major cities are all great tragedies unto themslves. But we musn't blame them. No, they were forced into these actions by open provocation. We must really blame Anthony Quinn, Britain, George Bush, and Team America. This is all really their faults for being culturally insensitive, and I urge others to join me in comndemning their woeful and misguided tolerance of free artistry."

According to sources in New York, the United Nations General Assembly is already considering a resolution, jointly proposed by China and North Korea, to do just that. The US and UK are aligned against the resolution, surprisingly supported in this case by Denmark.

It is often suggested that contemporary attempts at 'Islamic revival' are seeking to retrieve and to reinstall a type of religious state that had existed at some point in the history of Muslim societies. Have we looked at the history of Europe to see if there are any insights? What would happen if the catholic church kept on running things in Ireland? or Poland? or Italy? or etc. Back to the dark ages we go...

Religion and politics. Arab nationalism vs. Muslims or Irish nationalism vs. Catholics as an European example.
