The eagles return

In what is undoubtedly a harbinger of America's future, the bald eagle is back. From only 417 breeding pairs in 1967 to more than 10,000 today, the resurgent eagle has come to terms with suburban life and learned to live in the company of humans.

Three summers ago, one of those new breeding pairs produced a couple of offspring in a tree near our camp in the Adirondacks. I snapped this picture of one of the young, and it has been my "wallpaper" ever since:

Theo Spark, a pro-American Brit if there ever was one, has his own don't-miss bald eagle photo. Unless, of course, you're a jihadi.

I live in the Northeast quarter of Maryland, not far from the Susquehanna River and the Chesapeake Bay. We have, and have had, eagles all over the place. Seeing them hasn't been a novelty in many, perhaps 20, years. They especially enjoy the area around the Conowingo Dam and Aberdeen Proving Ground. All the explosions, gunfire, tanks rolling around around doesn't bother them a bit. Of course, the Army takes special care of the eagles nesting at APG. Plenty of fish, live or dead, rabbits, ground hogs, and road kill for them to munch on. The vultures usually keep the eagles off the road kill.

As a small aside, for those of you who clicked on Theo's link, looked at his (by now classic) eagle pic, then closed down the window or tab, you, uh, might want to check out his site a bit more. I can't speak for the left side of the blogosphere, but as far as the right side goes, Theo blows the competition away when it comes to mixing hot politics and hot babes.

I'm just sayin'!

No question about that Dr. Mercury, but it is barely SFW, so if you are working through a tough firewall you may want to take care.

Dr Mercury: Thanks for the kind words. The eagle pic is sadly not one of mine just something I found a while back. People who create such classics must sign their work. They deserve the credit. It is one of the best pics I have seen.

Tiger: In all honesty, I wouldn't call Theo's site even close to being SFW. :)

Theo: That was nice of you to forward your readers to Maggie's Farm this morning. I like eclectic sites much more than solely political sites, and Maggie's is one of the best. Until they directly linked to you the other day, I, like probably most of Maggie's readers, was wondering, "Just where do they get those pictures of such luscious babes?!"

We wonder no more! Fabulous taste in women on your part, dude, top shelf all the way.

Side note to "Bird of Paridise":

It's spelled "Paradise", you goofball. :)

They call it Paradise
I don't know why.
You call someplace Paradise,
kiss it goodbye.

And...

They paved Paradise and put up a parking lot!

I'm just sayin'!

Very good fald eagle photo you posted. The only time I ever saw any - in the Straits of Juan de Fuca - I didn't have a camera. They have, of course, always been rather plentiful in Alaska and Canada. I recently received a photo from a fellow in Alaska who has bald eagles strolling around his backyard, often a half-dozen of them.
