Miss Teen South Carolina on the subject of American parochialism

I assume that Miss Teen South Carolina will not attach this clip to her college application:

But then again, maybe she will.

All you smart blondes out there might want to consider darkening your hair.

UPDATE: She got another shot at the same question on the Today show, and did much better. Indeed, Lauren Caitlin Upton seems to have parlayed her blunder into substantially more publicity than she would have gotten if she'd gotten it right the first time. Probably good for her career, as long as she does not hope to work for the State Department. Note also that Ms. Upton was one of the top five finalists in the Miss Teen USA contest. I guess the on-stage interview phase is not weighed very heavily in the judging. And really, under the circumstances (see below), why should it be?

This makes me really angry. Not at the young lady, but at the people who are "raising" her. I should hope that her parents decide to devote some more time and emphasis to education rather than being pretty. While they are at it, they should wean this kid off of her Valley-girl speaking style (or whatever we call the "duh" style of speech these days). Start with taking away the cell phone that she stops talking like she is texting.

And I'm guessing she's a bottle blonde. We who are the real blondes can tell the difference!

She didn't sound markedly different from many, many politicians whose faces waft across the small screen.

That was one of Leno's "Jay Walking" auditions right?

I see Katie Couric's replacement is being groomed.

She forgot to mention the enviornment. A must for those college apps.

I cannot even comment, because I had to stop it 25 seconds into the clip(mind you the question took almost 20 seconds.) I am not fond of watching either train wrecks or car crashes and this look like a school bus running into a speeding train...

True, QuakerCat, true, but I do not think that the questions was intended to be difficult.

She's so painful to watch.

How about ... because our schools are so watered down with bilingual education and political correctness that there's no time to teach the old stuff, like geography.

I'll have to look into South Africa and Iraq for the quality educational systems.

Friggin' pathetic.

In (admittedly undeserved) defense of untraliberals, her "answer" is too incoherently moronic to have any real political component.

Here's the bad news: she'll probably end up as some gazillionaire's wife and have a net worth greater than all of ours put together.

Maybe she'll hit the trifecta and become the wife of a liberal gazillionaire in Hollywood. Then she'll fit right in, and be considered a sage for parroting the received lefty wisdom. Laurie David, anyone?

She isn't at all painful to watch. She is painful to listen to unfortunately.

Hey, anyone else notice that that bikini is a copy of the one Ursula Andress wore in Dr. No! Of course, Miss Teen Carolina is substantially less badass because she isn't wearing a huge knife on her hip. But I think she should consider a career move into film as a Bond girl. After all, she couldn't possibly be any worse than Denise Richards.

To all the condescending toungue-cluckers out there, please spare me. The answer was unintelligible, but she's a typical teenager. Her response, given in the glare of floodlights, was pretty much the same gibberish you get from the average kid in any high school.

In all fairness, let's give the teen a break. Her answer might not be anything that we expected but then again, we never knew how it feels to be overwhelmed by everything. Everyone makes mistakes, unfortunately, she does too (just not at the right moment). It'll be a lesson to learn for everyone involved.
