The reasons why the tide turned

Ralph Peters' column this morning has some praise for Generals Petraeus and Odierno -- they are winning because they want to win and their soldiers know it -- and some great bits of quippy wisdom:

"Sorry, Muqtada - that's what you get for believing The New York Times."

"Oh, and under Petraeus our troops have been relentless in their pursuit of our enemies. Contrary to the myths of the left, peace can only be built over the corpses of evil men."

Read the whole thing.

They employ 9 democrats to 1 republican and the MSM can't figure out why they are in trouble. Even Sen. Clinton believed their distorted version of the truth just two months ago when she called Gen. Petraeus a liar in front of the whole world. Copperheads.

Let's hope Peters and others pound the point home: This success is due as much to a change in tactics as to the introduction of "more boots on the ground." I suppose the criticism will live on... that if only Rumsfeld had put an initial force of half a million in place, all would have been well from the get-go. The fact is, to use one example, there were plenty enough boots and bullets to put down the rioting in post-invasion Baghdad, but the decision was made not to shoot looters. Perhaps, in retrospect, it was a mistake not to do so. On the other hand, just imagine the criticism had the order been given to do so.

Petraeus and Odierno have managed to quietly rewrite the rules of engagement and allowed our soldiers to remorselessly kill those who need to be killed, protect and persuade the rest, while incorporating diplomatic skill sets our State Department might do well to learn and employ.

All in all what has happened in a few short months is amazing. Let's hope our civilian leadership doesn't ruin it.

And contrary to another set of myths of the left, real progress can only be made domestically after the stuffing is knocked out of the political left in this country.

anon- it's too bad that Petraeus wasn't put in charge years ago. But at least he's there now. The question now is whether there's any domestic US political capital remaining.
