Oakville, Iowa died, and may have saved other towns

A small Iowa town died when the levees broke. It is probably gone forever, but in death it may have saved other small towns. The linked post is just an email from a reader who grew up there, but it is a heartwarming tale of Iowa nonetheless. Be sad, and be glad, for Oakville.

I spent the past weekend in rural Arkansas and Missouri. The towns are not quite as small as Oakville, but t owns of 1500 people separated by miles of farmland aren't exactly large. The young people move on, the remaining population ages, but they keep on keeping on.

It's hard too imagine land areas that vast, and all the homes, under flood waters. So many good people's lives just torn up. I hope they pull the pieces together, and hope they get a fraction of the help those in NOLA got.
