A note to Glenn Reynolds

Shhh. Be cool. Keep that last thought entre nous, please. The rubes will react with rage and hostility if they figure out that they are, in fact, the rubes.

(But I kind of feel the same way.)

This is just a head fake.
He's not scheduled to go "Hugo Chavez" until the second term.

If that's the case, we bitter gun-clingers promise won't go "George Washington" until the second term either.

I think Obama is saving his political capital to move left on the economy and health care -- rather than waste it on a peacenik foreign policy.

On enviro and social issues Obama just has to appoint judges who can impose lefty policies by judicial fiat.

I think it makes perfect sense to keep gates in place; Obama is just being pragmatic. Gates has not been an ideologue the past two years, he has demonstrated competence, and most importantly of all: he gives the administration cover to focus on its domestic agenda.

Da rubes are da rubes are da rubes. You can come down from the mountain with two stone tablets and they'll STILL be the rubes. So don't worry too much about tipping 'em off. In this world, truth hides in plain sight. Enjoy.

Poker wisdom: If you can't tell who the mark is, you're the mark.

You Can't Cheat an Honest Man is a 1939 comedy film starring and scripted by W.C. Fields. Fields plays "Larsen E. Whipsnade", the owner of a shady carnival that is constantly on the run from the law. The whimsical title comes from a line in an earlier film, in which he says that his grandfather's last words, "just before they sprung the trap", were "You can't cheat an honest man; never give a sucker an even break, or smarten up a chump."

Keep an eye on SCOTUS Justice Anthony Kennedy's health. If he slips on a banana peel, chokes on a pretzel, etc., *THEN* it's time to bundle up the shotgun and MREs and head for the hills...

By Blogger TigerHawk, at Wed Nov 26, 06:12:00 AM:

Surely you're not hoping some Mick will sober up long enough to crawl off the paddy wagon and tell us what the derivation of that tacky slur is?

Ah, so - a slur against guys named Reuben. Heh.

Still, explanation of etymology, or anything else, for that matter, is the not the responsibility of those who don't give a shit about it. You should try that new "that's just how the world works, and most folks understand that by about 13" thing.
