Football in Texas is so prominent that the Dallas Morning News online edition has the Cowboys section as the first section and at least one story about the Cowboys in every other section. So, no Cowboys fan has any idea of geography outside the end zone. Let alone any inkling of what is going on outside of the sports section.

On which real life QB did Peter Gent base Seth Maxwell in "North Dallas Forty?"

QB Seth Maxwell is based on "Dandy" Don Meredith, who was probably the funniest MNF color analyst after his playing days were completed. Meredith was a good foil to Howard Cosell, and liked to sing "turn out the lights, the party's over" toward the end of games that had been decided for some time. Mac Davis did a decent job portraying him in the movie version of Gent's novel.
