Mike Huckabee dodges a bullet

It's a good thing that Democrats are too principled to use "Willie Horton"-style political advertising, or this would hurt Mike Huckabee.

CWCID: Glenn Reynolds.

Huckabee has zero chance of getting past a Republican presidential primary fight after this (and rightly so).

Why shouldn't it hurt Huckabee? We have NEVER needed another Arkie governor to run the country.
It will be interesting, however, to watch the captive media go berserk over this what with Huckabee on FOX and all.

Typo! You used "Democrats" and "too principled" in the same sentence without a /sarc tag.

Democrats shouldn't need to use it - I'd hope other Republicans in the primary would make sure everyone knew about his complicity in these murders.

Democrats won't use it because they have nothing to fear from the guy; many conservatives also dislike him.

Rest assured though, that had Huckabee posed any sort of threat to Democrats, they would have been the first ones to Hortonize him.

It'll never get to Democrats. Huckabee now can't be the nominee, because everyone knows what will come of it. Good riddence anyways, he was never my choice for anything but some sort of cabinet position.

Anyone who answers a serious policy question with, "I dunno, but I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night! ha ha ha" doesn't need to be anywhere near the White House.

I'm not fond of Huckabee (ok, I think he's bonkers), but I'd give him a pass on this, at least until there is better information available. And I'm super-glad Clemmons is dead (I live in Seattle), given his violent history.

However, the crimes that Clemmons was convicted for (at age 18), and that Huckabee gave him a pass on, were relatively minor burglary charges, for which Clemmons was sentenced to 95 years (I think -- I know it was more than 90). 95 years for burglary, when most convicted murderers get a fourth of that, is insane. So, given the information that Huckabee had available at the time (i.e. Clemmons' history at that time), it may have been a rational, justifiable decision.

Now, I don't know what Clemmons' behavior was from the time of his burglary convictions to the time of Huckabee's release order. I seriously doubt he behaved like an angel or felt any regret (aside from the criminal's regret of "poor me, I got caught.") I'm sure someone will dig into that, now that Huckabee has been linked to him. If his behavior was reasonably good, then Huckabee will get off with only a little idiotic crowing from the left -- as he should. If his behavior was pretty foul, and he was *still* released, then there will be hell to pay for Huckabee -- and rightly so. Cops usually vote right of center, and alienating a whole community (including the police and everyone) for releasing this asshole will not do Huckabee any good.

The end of 2009 has been hard on local police. Five police (in two unrelated incidents) murdered in the coldest manner, without any regard for who these people were, and every indication that these were solid cops and led healthy families... damn it makes me angry.
