In which I'm on the side of John Conyers

Apparently 81 year-old Democratic Congressman John Conyers was spotted riffling through an issue of Playboy magazine on an airplane. Perhaps not the classiest move in the world, but you have to admire his, er, get up and go. Reminds me a bit of my edgiest great aunt, who occasionally pushed against the boundaries of propriety, at least as defined in her circles, and, when reproofed, would say "I'm an old woman and I'll do any goddamn thing I want."

I think the guy deserves an award for flying coach!

What he reads is irrelevant.

The mag is a non-issue as far as I am concerned.

Well, also, his wife is in the slammer for taking bribes. So what's a married guy to do?

So, what's the beef? Playboy is a fine publication with many interesting political opinion articles. That they also print an occasional photograph is bad, how? This, after all, the 20th century; we have the technology for color imagery, and lots of periodicals publish pictures....

Excuse me, Eric...but isn't this currently the 21st century?
Just checking, I wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything ;-D

I agree! I hope when I'm 81 I remember what all that stuff was for. And, I can't believe that Conyers flies in coach. What happened to all that wealth that he and his wife "acquired" over the years? It couldn't have ALL gone on lawyers for the Mrs.

Cas--Hence the irony of the comment....

"I'm an old woman and I'll do any goddamn thing I want."

Words for our time. And to think I spent 18+ years trying to teach my sons that being an adult means understanding that you don't just get to do whatever you want.

One wonders how a NOW would react to a Demint reading Playboy in Public as opposed to Conyers?

Cassandra - the time was not wasted. Being able to do whatever you want is a sentiment that is proper for a person who has a lifetime of experience learning that all actions have consequences, and being willing to accept them. 18 year-olds usually have a false picture of that, and had best be taught to avoid as many negative consequences as possible. They'll learn soon enough which corners can be cut and conventions flouted.
