Whaling

If watching and photographing birds is "birding," then what is it if you go in search of whales? My cousin did just that today:

There are fewer than 450 North Atlantic right whales living today. Nearly 100 of them are feeding off the tip of Cape Cod this week, and the children and I went out looking for them.

I'd say that is more than a little righteous, man.

Like going to a Minnesota/Iowa Football game and watching cheerleaders? Sorry couldn't help myself, heard way too many jokes about both cheerleading squads while in Iowa going to school. mpw

Here on the west coast we call it "Whale Watching". Whaling sounds too much like "wailing". We went out almost 20 years ago to see the California Grey Whales migrating down to Mexico. We also got to see some of the US Marines new hovercraft going through their paces. It was a very enjoyable day and the children talk about it still.

Come to Boston. There are three or four whale watching trips to Georges Bank every day. They get quite close to the whales, sometimes within ten to fifteen feet if the animals cooperate. The stampede from one side of the boat to the other to get the best view can be very entertaining all on its own.

The best watch I was ever on was in Nova Scotia in the Bay of Fundy. My family of four and the captain in a Zodiac. The whales passed right under the boat and we could touch them. Of course, if one of the whales had decided to go flukes up we'd have been in big trouble.

Whale watching is big business in Provincetown. This particular migration will make for very cool experiences for whoever rides those cruises.
