The Texas drought of 2011

For those of you who have only heard of, and not seen, the great drought in most of Texas this year, take a look at this slideshow. It is very sobering.

A map of the damage, here.

Living it in Houston. Barely keeping the bushes alive!

I lived in Austin for a long time, and most of that slideshow looks like Lake Travis area. There were a few droughts while i lived there, but I don't remember any of them where the lake got that bad. Still live in TX, now in the Houston-Galveston area, and the drought is pretty bad here; some of the trees in my yard look like they are dying. Supposed to get some rain this weekend, sure hope that we do.

On the other hand, here in Central Ohio we've had a coolish wet summer, and my lawn is actually as lush as I've ever seen it in 27 years.

The climate advantages of the Midwest are so huge that a reverse migration from the Southwest back home might be coming.

This is Lake Travis. Travis is the flood control lake which has the most extreme level changes. The lake upstream and the lake downstream don't look quite this bad, but central Texas is pretty burnt up. Bastrop County just east of Austin just lost 1500 homes to a huge wildfire. Have fun at ACL and post some pictures!

Here are some lyrics ffromThe Merry Minuet by The Kingston Trio.

They’re rioting in Africa
They’re starving in Spain
There’s hurricanes in Florida
And Texas needs rain.

This song from the 1950s has been updated for the 21st century.

They’re rioting in Tottenham
They’re flat broke in Spain
There’s hurricanes on Wall Street
And Texas needs rain.

Some things never change.
