Bismarck speaks

Way cool: In a cabinet in Thomas Edison's laboratory, the only known recordings of Chancellor Otto von Bismarck and Helmuth von Moltke, taken in 1889. Von Moltke was born in 1800, so in addition to whipping the French in 1871 he is probably the first-born human being to have been recorded.

A while ago they found an old silent film version of Henry V, or perhaps it was Richard III from around 1914 or so. The last I heard they had not finished restoring it. Recent history requires effort to preserve it just like the antiquities.

Reminds me of the old observation that many of the laugh tracks still used on TV were recorded back in the 1950s.
