Cultural hara kiri

There are aspects of Japanese culture that most Westerners find surprising. None may be more surprising than this.

What would cause a significant percentage of young people to lose interest in sex? Or are they just lying for some other cultural reason we are unlikely to understand?

No arguing with the birth rate, though.

Several things would cause them to lose interest. Number one is that they have no place to have sex. They live in crowded apartments with mom, dad, the grandparents, and their brothers and sisters. Tokyo, especially, is like NYC. Cars used to be cheap before their economy crashed in the early '90s. But even then parking was very expensive, so car ownership wasn't all that common. Now both are expensive, and fewer families own cars.

Then, cars were never seen as a place for assignations. Where are you going to park in Tokyo and get any privacy anyway?

The traditional approach is to go to "love hotels." These rent out rooms by the hour and the rooms have different themes like "speed racer" or "caveman." Actually, most customers were married. To each other. Because like the teenagers they were also trying to get some privacy away from gramps and the kids. But they cost money and if you don't have much of a job, or any job, they're not really an option.

But the good new is that the sex drive of women goes up with age. So that dismal percentage of girls with any interest in sex, after you remove the averse ones from the pool, increases considerably by the time they hit their thirties.

Which makes it a fine place to be stationed as a thirty something Naval officer with an apartment all to himself.

Japanese women are, as a rule, terrible in bed--submissive, quiet, stiff, boring.

And apparently the only thing worse than Japanese women is . . . Japanese men.

Anon2, this is Anon1. I was married to a Japanese woman. We're divorced now because losing a child and then my long deployment overseas following 9/11 proved too much. For the both of us.

But if that's your opinion of Japanese women, take a look in the mirror. You lived down to the low expectation they've grown to expect of men.

I'm sure Tigerhawk doesnt' want his comment sections resembling the "letters" section of Playboy.

So I'll say no more.
